March Round Table Notes - April Activities

Here are the notes from March's Round Table!  Again, let me know if this format is working or not!

Just found out from Mrs Evi Fyffe:

My husband just took my kids down to Home Depot and their project for the kids club is making a bird feeder. If you have any Bears, this passes off Achievemnet 5B. They are super cool and easy to make! It will also be easy and cheap to copy to make with a Den!

Good information that was shared on our facebook page!  Are you on FB yet???

You need enough happiness to keep you serene;

Enough troubles to make you strong;

Enough suffering to make you human;

Enough hopes to keep you optimistic;

Enough failures to keep you humble;

Enough success to keep you confident;

Enough friends to give you comfort;

Enough enthusiasm to make you dare boldly;

Enough faith to banish depression;

Pack Leaders: Spring Recruiting and Summertime Pack Award

Why should we use Spring Recruiting? Because as we know, becoming a Scout helps shape boys futures and Characters and you may find boys now you would not come the busy new school year. If you register them before the Summer they will have all the fun of your Summer Pack Program as well as the opportunity to earn their own Summertime Pin!

How can we do Spring Recruiting? There are innumerable options- here are some ideas.

  • Summer Day Camp! Make a poster or a webpage showing off your pictures from last years Summer Day Camp! (Or a friends) ;)
  • Science Fair: Have each Den do one or more Science projects and invite the community to it.
  • Field Day: Put together some of the Cub Requirements to form a Field Day and have the boys invite their friends from school and their community
  • Put flyers on mailboxes and community bulletin boards (They are free at Council- you simply add your Pack info to them!)
  • Make Pass Along cards for your Scouts with the Den Meeting time and location as well as Den Leader contact info
Don't forget- your boys can earn a Recruiter Patch to wear on their uniforms if they bring a friend into Scouting!

And don't forget to plan for your National Summertime Pack Award! Here is the form http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/33748.pdf

Character Connections: Faith

Baden-Powell and Faith

Baden-Powell was totally unembarrassed about the role of faith in character-building. At the heart of the Scouting and Guiding promises was their ‘duty to God’. When dealing with conflicts in the Scouting movement, B.P. recommended that people "...ask themselves the simple question, ‘What would Christ have done under the circumstances?’ and be guided accordingly." Baden-Powell saw a danger in Scouting that the recreational might overwhelm the spiritual side. So he wrote them… "Don’t let the technical outweigh the moral. Field efficiency, backwoodsmanship, camping, hiking, good turns, Jamboree comradeships are all means, not the end. The end is CHARACTER --character with a purpose...the active service of Love and Duty to God and neighbour."

Alice, Golden Empire Council (from Baloo's Bugle)

Skit: Two Suckers on a Stick

Two Suckers on a Stick Skit
Required: 1 stick
5 Scouts (or more)
2 volunteers (victims)
Script:
Choose two good-natures volunteers from the audience to help with the skit. Have each one hold up one end of the board to act as the counter in a candy shop.

One Scout is the store owner and the other 4 (or more) Scouts are customers that enter the store one at a time.

Customer 1: "Do you have any gumdrops?"
Owner: "Sorry, I’m all out."
Customer 2: "Do you have any bubble gum?"
Owner: "Sorry, I’m all out."
Customer 3: "Do you have any chocolate covered ants?"
Owner: "Sorry, I’m all out."
Customer 4: "Do you have any licorice?"
Owner: "Sorry, I’m all out."
Customer 4: "Well then what DO you have??"
Owner: "How about these two suckers on a stick?"

Cub Scout Prayer Song
Tune: "O Tannenbaum"
Lord, in this evening hour I pray
For strength to do my best each day.
Draw near to me that I may see
The kind of Cub Scout I should be.
In serving others, let me see
That I am only serving Thee.

That I may be a better Cub.

Tips for Pack Activity - Pack Star Gazing

Tips for pack Activity – Pack Star Gazing

A Pack could choose to go to a local planetarium or meet outside away from buildings and city lights! An open field or hill is ideal.
· Boys and their families can come early and lay out their blankets to watch the stars come out.
· Using books and star finders, families could look for constellations and tell some stores connected with constellations.
· There are often one or two parents in a pack who are knowledgeable about stars.
· You could have a guest speakers from a local astronomy society come.
· Some amateur astronomy societies have free programs for families and children and may make available their telescopes along with their service.

Make sure to follow certain steps to make this outing safe and successful.
· Restroom facilities?
· Adequate supervision.
· Have a backup plan in case of inclement weather.

Have a reflection time at the end of stargazing. This is a great time to bring Faith into Cub Scouts.

Indoor Activities:
· Constellation Punch Outs
· Astronomy Belt Loop

Character Connections: Compassion

If you want others to be happy- practice compassion. If you want to be happy- practice compassion. -Dalai Lama

Pack Leaders: Conservation Good Turn Award

The Conservation Good Turn Award is different from a usual Service Project in that it requires a little more planning with someone in the Community. One of the purposes behind that is to make Scouting more visible in our Communities. If we can get our Scouts and our families out serving their communities we can help Scouting keep a positive image and a a real impact.

We can work with many Federal Agencies including the Forest Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Your Pack can also work with State and Local Government as well as any other organizations in your community.

When filling out the application you count the total hours given in service by everyone that helped. For this reason you want the entire families participating in these service projects. What a great way to share the value of service and Scouting with the entire family! There should be certificates available from the Council and I know there are Patches available for purchase at the Scout Shop.

Have fun planning this and doing something the boys will be able to point to in their community as they go about their lives!

For more information visit http://scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/Resources/Conservation%20Good%20Turn.aspx

Feb RT Den Leader Breakout Notes

February Round Table (March Activities)
Compassion: Being kind and considerate, and showing concern for the well being of others. Cub Scouts will develop care and concern for the well being of others by participating in the effort to collect items for charities.

Games
Orbiter and Fall Orbiter I have employed a scheme of learning and games to good success. Here are two examples. It is like musical chairs. There is one fewer chairs than boys. The extra boy is the Sun. The other boys are each assigned a planet (Mars, Jupiter, etc.) The sun orbits around the chairs calling out the names of planets. The planet (boy) called gets up and walks (orbits) around the chairs with the sun. When all the planets are orbiting, the den leader yells Blast Off. All the boys scramble for a chair. The one left standing becomes the Sun.

Animal Charades
Boys pick a slip of paper from a hat that has a name of an animal on it. Then they act out the animal by either making the animal sound or acting like the animal or both.
Ideas include: bear, dog, snake, bee, cat, tiger, butterfly, bird, monkey, lion, elephant, etc.

Human Knot Each person grabs hands with two different people across a circle. Group works to untangle itself. (leadership, everyone important)

Blanket Volleyball Divide group into two teams, each with a blanket held like a parachute. Toss in an object that is volleyed from team to team using the blanket for propulsion. Can add multiple objects..

Tigers Den Meetings 13 & 14
Meeting 13
ELECTIVE 27. Talk with your adult partner about what to do if:
The adult who is caring for you becomes ill
You are alone with someone who makes you uncomfortable
Possibly do this as a gathering ie have a few simple mazes and these 2 questions on a piece of paper and have ready for when the boys and parents arrive.
ELECTIVE 26.
With a toy phone practice making phone calls and answering the phone.
For extra fun, use a real phone and have the boys call your home phone or the # they are using and leave a message. Play it back so they can hear themselves and practice!
ELECTIVE 12. & 15.
Make at least 2 cards or decorations and take them to a hospital or long-term care facility. Using crayons mix the primary colors to make orange, green and purple. Since this activity is in March consider making St. Patrick's Day themed cards or decorations. Ask the adult partners to help the boys deliver them.

Meeting 14
Go See It: Pet Care and Learn about Animals
Options for go see include : Veterinarian, pet groomer, pet store, nature preserve, animal shelter, science teacher (with animals) or farmer (with animals). Another option is to have someone come to you!
ELECTIVE 43.. Field trip or visitor (see above)
ELECTIVE 31. Learn about an animal. Use questions from Tiger Handbook such as: How big is the animal? Is it endangered? What does it? Where does it live? How long do they live? Etc.

Wolf Den Meetings 13 & 14
Meeting 13.
Elective 14 Pets
Invite 1 or more scouts to bring their pets with a parent making sure there will be no pet conflicts! Schedule in 10 minute increments if needed. If no one has a pet (in our pack's case) then invite a vet, dog groomer or other person with animal knowledge.
Learn how to greet a strange dog, read a book about a pet and tell what it means to be rabid. If u have a special guest consider briefing them on the requirements and having them run the discussion and book time.

Meeting 14.
Elective 10 a
American Indian Lore
Read a book or tell a story about American Indians, or if you know an American Indian invite them to come and tell a story.
Elective 10 c , 10f , 1 a,1 b,1 d

Learn some Indian word pictures, make some traditional Indian clothing and write a simple message in code using white paper, a q-tip and milk.
Ideas for Indian clothing: A head dress made of consruction paper and feathers or a vest made from a brown paper sack. If you make the vest or head dress have the boys write a story using the Indian word pictures they learned.

Also have the voys write a simple message in the Indian word picture in milk aka invisble ink. I have used lemon juice which the book suggests, but I think the milk works better!

Bear Den Meetings 13 & 14
Take care of your Planet
Meeting 13
ACHIEVEMENT 5b. Now is a wonderful time to finish up your birdhouses or start them if your last den meeting didnt allow time for them. Remember you can buy the BSA kits at the Scout Shop, use recycled wood from Home Depot (must acquire scraps, make a pattern and pre assemble BEFORE the den meeting), or from another store like Hobby Lobby or Michael's.
Finish up any requirements from last d
Take care of your Planeten meeting.

Meeting 14
Home assignments : 6e. 6f. Each boy should lead a discussion at home about what kinds of energy their family uses and how to conserve it.
6d. With an adult they will check faucets for leaks.
Do at least 3 out of seven of Achievement 6
6a. Save 5 pounds of glass or aluminum or one month of daily newspapers. Turn them into a rectclimg center or use your community services.

A fun activity is a recycling relay. Two piles of possible recyclables and trash items. One recycling bin one trash bin. Two teams. Once leader says go, the boys run and find a recyclable or trash item and place it in the correct bin.

Pollute a pool and then clean it up.
A great gathering activity when u are talking about recyclimg is to take small kiddie pool and fill it part way with water. Then "pollute" the water with the boys. Then have them try to clean the water. Some things they will be able to easily take out, but use somethings that they cannot. Like food dye, sand, etc.

Scout: Howie who?
Leader: Fine thanks. How are you
Scout: I hate these one week camp outs. You comb your hair, you brush your teeth, you put a clean set of clothes on, and at the end of the week you have to do it all over again.
A Scout Leader was driving to a camp out and happened to see a truck run over a rabbit. He stopped, got out of his truck, and revived the rabbit. A Cub Scout asked the leader, "What did you use to make that rabbit hop off?" The Leader grinned and said, "Hare restorer."
A Cub Scout Leader was driving into a State Park and saw a sign that read, "To enter State Park you must have dog on leash." The silly leader then spent the next two hours looking for a dog.
Three Cub Scouts were bragging about how tough they were.
"I wear out a pair of hiking boots in a month," the first scout said.
"I wear out a pair of Scout pants in a week," the second scout said.
"That's nothing," the last scout said, "I wear out a leader in 20 minutes."
Leader: What has 50 heads but can't think?
Scout: I do not know.
Leader: A box of matches
Scout: My den leader thinks I am very responsible. Every time something goes wrong at a Pack Meeting, he says I am responsible.
Leader: What did the cowboy yell to the scout who was stuck out on the lake?
Scout: I don't have the foggiest idea.
Leader: Hey, pardner! Whoa, whoa, whoa your boat.
Leader: What did one flag say to the other flag?
Scout: I can't guess.
Leader: Nothing. It just waved!
Scout: "What's more important, your money or your health?
Leader: "My health."
Scout: "Great, can you lead me 20 bucks?"
Webelos Scout: "My den leader sure does like me. I heard him tell another leader that it would be the happiest day of his life when I crossed over into the Boy Scouts."
Leader: Go look in that tent over there. You'll see a ten-foot snake.
Scout: Don't try to kid me. I know snakes don't have feet.
Leader: What kind of scout can jump higher than a house?
Scout: All kinds - houses can't jump!

Top Ten Count Down

Top ten signs that dad is taking the Pinewood Derby too seriously:

10. Dad 'trash talks' the tiger cubs
9. The Scout gets his first look at the car as he walks to the registration table
8. Dad keeps referring to it as 'my car'
7. Car and Driver magazine wants to feature your car on next month's cover
6. Dad threatens to break the Scout's fingers if he touches it after the wheels are on
5. Mom asks the Cubmaster to delay the start of the race because "we're still taking bets"
4. Dad asked Santa for a Pinewood Derby track for Christmas
3. "What? You mean there are no trophies for the adults?"
2. Even though he is in the stands, 60' feet away, dad is sure the finish line judge called it wrong
1. At the end of the race, Dad is the one crying

P.s. I didn't come up with this myself! I will do my best to find the credentials!

Interfaith - Resourcefulness

When asked where religion came into Scouting and Guiding, Baden-Powell replied. It does not come in at all. It is already there. It is a fundamental factor underlying Scouting and Guiding.”

Games!

Train Tag Game
“IT” is a locomotive and all other players are runaway cars. When the locomotive tags a car, they boy tagged hooks onto the locomotive by holding onto his waist. Then next one tagged hooks onto the last car in line and so on until the train is completed.

STRINGER
Materials: One pipe cleaner per team and buttons or beads for each team
Each team has a pipe cleaner and a number of beads. One person strings a bead or button and then hands it to the next player. This continues until one team finishes and says, “We did our best!”.

Recycled Lid Frisbee Toss Game
Collect plastic lids from yogurt, margarine, coffee cans etc for this game. Set up two target circles with string and divide the boys into two teams. Mark the lids with two different letters to signify each team (B and G for Blues and Golds, etc) One point for each hit target and one point taken away for hitting the opposing team’s target.

Orbiter
It is like musical chairs. There is one fewer chairs than boys. The extra boy is the Sun. The other boys are each assigned a planet (Mars, Jupiter, etc.) The sun orbits around the chairs calling out the names of planets. The planet (boy) called gets up and walks (orbits) around the chairs with the sun. When all the planets are orbitting, the den leader yells Blast Off. All the boys scramble for a chair. The one left standing becomes the Sun.

Animal Charades

Pack Leaders: Unit Leadership Enhancements

Unit Leadership Enhancements are short training topics intended to help better equip pack leaders to conduct a quality Cub Scout Program. These brief training sessions are to be conducted during the monthly pack leaders’ planning meetings, they are designed to foster discussion among leaders and familiarize them with the BSA resources and guidelines.

They are located near the end of the "Cub Scout Leader Book." There are fifteen topics, use them in whatever order works best for your Pack.  Make sure you read the "Preparation" portion beforehand so you can better lead the discussion. It would be a good idea to make sure everyone in your Pack has a copy of the Cub Scout Leader Book, if that's not possible make sure they have a copy of whatever pages they need for the topic you are highlighting that month. Conduct the short discussion and exercise during each pack leaders' monthly meeting as a regular new business item.

Run-ons: "Time" for February

Run-ons (Based on the alternate "Turn Back the Clock" theme for February)

Cub 1: What time is it?
Cub 2: Three o'clock.
Cub 1: Oh no!
Cub 2: What's the matter?
Cub 1: I've been asking the time all day. And everybody gives me a different answer!

Cub 1:  How come you didn't wait to see the second act of  the play?
Cub 2:  Didn't have time. The program said it took place a year later.

Q. If twenty dogs run after one cat, what time is it?
A. Twenty after one.

A man with one watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure.

Cheers: for February

Welcome!

Welcome to the Blog for the Superstition District Cub Scout Roundtable! We will be using this to post resources, links and information for all the Cub Scout Leaders in our District (and perhaps beyond.) We hope it will make it easy and convenient for everyone to get the information they need. Please let us know if you need anything!

Sincerely,
Your Cub Scout Roundtable Staff

For the Staff: When posting, please use the labels below to tag your post with your name as well as what it is you are posting. Here are some examples of labels: Council Camp, Pow Wow, Committee Chair, Cub Master, Webelos, Den Leader, Registration, Popcorn, Fundraisers, Skits, Cheers, Run-ons, Games, Tie Slides, Ceremonies, each of the Values and the months, etc. We want to have enough that are easy for people to get exactly what they need but not so many that it defeats the purpose of using tags. Also, if you got the information from somewhere else, please source it! And make sure that what you post is specific to Cub Scouts and their Leaders! Thank you! :)
